Memphis. Tennessee. Overview. Just the name Memphis, makes you want to rock and roll! You will swing here on your Ocean USA holiday! Famous for music as in Chuck Berry’s ‘Memphis Tennessee’ and for its delicious pork, you will love quirky Memphis. Singers Johnny Cash, Howlin Wolf and Isaac Hayes are the Gods of Memphis in the sharp downtown area. Apart from the throbbing music life and stars, Memphis has its fair share of difficulties like any other city. The rich in their mansions live round the corner from the poor in shacks. College campus buildings are stuck in the middle of worn districts. The odd combination of glamour and grit is what makes Memphis such a heady mix. The main tourist district is between Union Avenue, Beale Street and Main and 4th Streets. At weekends it is turned into a no traffic zone which makes the area ripe for one big party! The shops, clubs, bars and restaurants are Midtown along Union Avenue by Overton Square, and Cooper- Young Avenue. Wait for it! Graceland is 3 miles South of Town on US51, which is also called, ‘Elvis Presley Boulevard’. It was opened for tours in 1982 by Elvis’ daughter Priscilla Presley. Elvis had it redecorated to suit his own tastes with green shag carpeted ceiling, and yellow vinyl walls to explain just two of his colour coding decisions. His taste is now viewed as the perfect 1970s decor. Can you hear that Elvis? What about Heartbreak Hotel?! Visit the Memphis Music Studios whether you are an Elvis fan or not.
